Post Traumatic Stress In Order- PTSIO.
In the year 2009, four years after retiring from a twenty-five year Army career, I was diagnosed with PTSD, or, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Yes, the fact is I did a tour during Desert Storm and two to Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) followed by another year in Iraq as a contractor. The priod of time away from home and in the war zone during those twilight years spanned from 2003-2007. But, I did not like the term, “disorder”. To me it is and has always been a misnomer that indicates an element of human disorder exists. The term also stipulated that a malady or illness existed in me or anyone else diagnosed with PTSD. To quote a couple of terms from the eighties, “What’s up with that?” “I’m not down with it.” Nor should anybody else be comfortable with the word, “Disorder”.
Thus, welcome to PTSIO, that is, Post Traumatic Stress In Order! Bfore I continue, let me assure the reader that I am not denying those who deployed to a combat zone at any time is not without some kind of post-traumatic stress. How could we not be? However, rather than looking at it as a disorder, I posit that we should learn from our experiences and make the most of our present situation to share our lessons learned and become productive members of society for the future generation, just as many of us have already done.
As for me, I turned to writing and teaching. I taught college for seven years and now I teach middle school. Writing and teaching give me a sense of purpose. Other veterans and family members may find solace in fishing, singing, painting, riding motorcycles...and the list goes on.
Together, I encourage us to find our life's purpose. We can help ourselves and help others as well. Oh, I love and have great fun with my grandchildren as well!
I am a retired military veteran, a writer, and a middle school teacher. I write fiction and non-fiction stories based on my 25 years of military experience and a world traveling tour of more than 20 different countries.
My passion is fueled by an understanding of the nuances associated with cross-cultural and diverse storytelling. I consider myself a life-learner and teacher with ongoing professional development to build on my academic foundations in education, information management, business, and the military.
I am determined to turn life experiences and educational knowledge into action as an author and as a teacher at Windy Ridge K8 Academic School of Excellence. I am currently taking courses in the Gifted Program and building the curriculum for the new Business Technology program at Windy Ridge, which will begin in 2021-2022.
I believe believes that education through experience and solid programs being taught in the live and virtual classroom is key to success, a tenet I live out by my interests in writing, teaching, caring, and storytelling.
